What is a public performance?
A public performance, in the context of the music industry, refers to any instance where a song or a musical work is played in public. This could be live, at a concert, a bar or a restaurant, or played over the radio, television, or via a streaming service. It could also refer to music being played in a public space, such as a shopping mall, hotel, or fitness center.

The rights to these public performances are typically managed by Performance Rights Organizations (PROs). These organizations collect licensing fees from entities that play music publicly and distribute these fees as royalties to the songwriters, composers, and music publishers who hold the rights to the songs. In the United States, the major PROs include ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, GMR. In Canada, SOCAN and Re:Sound.

It's important for venues or businesses that play music publicly to have the proper licenses to avoid copyright infringement.
